Sandstone Cleaning

Restore your sandstone and bring the colour back to your walls, paths and flooring without damaging the stone.

High pressure water cleaning can be very destructive to sandstone in inexperienced hands. Waterworx uses fingertip control over the water pressure when cleaning sensitive surfaces like sandstone, and lowering the pressure is what makes the difference.

Sandstone is porous and harbours algae deep down. Blasting it at high pressure only disfigures the stone. Instead we apply a surfactant based treatment while the stone is wet, so it penetrates where plain water cannot, kills the algae and its spores, and lets them be removed with a low pressure clean.

When sandstone driveways, walkways, retaining walls or paths turn black or green with algae, our process brings them back to life so they look the way they did when they were first built.

Low pressure method

Controlled pressure that protects soft, porous stone.

Algae killed at depth

Sandstone surfaces we clean

Sandstone shows algae as black or green staining, especially in shaded and damp areas.

  • Paths and walkways
  • Stairs and paving
  • Retaining walls, walls and fences
  • Driveways and footpaths

Why not high pressure?

High pressure strips the soft face of sandstone and leaves it scarred, while the algae deep in the pores survives and returns.

  • Pressure lowered for soft stone
  • Treatment applied wet for penetration
  • Low pressure rinse to finish

How we approach the work

  1. 1

    Inspect the stone

We check the condition of the sandstone and the staining.

  2. 2

    Treat

A surfactant based treatment is applied to wet stone to kill algae and spores.

  3. 3

    Low pressure clean

Dead growth is removed with controlled low pressure.

  4. 4

    Seal if wanted

Sealing can help protect the cleaned stone.

Frequently asked questions

Will pressure cleaning damage my sandstone?

High pressure can. We lower the pressure and rely on a treatment that kills algae deep in the stone, so it can be removed with a low pressure clean.

Can you seal sandstone after cleaning?

Yes. Ask us about our sandstone sealing process when you request a quote.
